Senior dogs over 8: age limits vs vet history

By Bradley Jacobs · Published Aug 31, 2026 · Last checked Oct 26, 2026

Many vets call a dog a senior at about age 8. That birthday is not a no. Two things matter: will the carrier start a new policy at that age, and how much of your dog's vet history gets left out.

If your dog is 9

  • Trupanion takes dogs under 14. A 9-year-old fits.
  • Embrace gives full plans to dogs under 15. A 9-year-old fits.
  • Fetch, Pets Best, and Spot list no top age.
  • Lemonade's top age depends on breed and state. Run the quote form.

None of this means your dog's arthritis, tooth disease, or old knee injury will be paid.

Trupanion’s eligibility FAQ (retrieved via public search Aug 2026; a later direct fetch was blocked by Trupanion’s CDN): cats and dogs under 14 are eligible; pets enrolled before the 14th birthday keep coverage for life. Pets 14 and over cannot newly enroll.Get a quote from Trupanion

What “no top age” really means

  • Your dog will not be turned down for age alone. It does not mean problems already in the vet notes are covered.
  • Prices usually go up with age. We do not make up senior prices. Verify on the quote form.
  • Embrace: dogs 15 and older can only get accident-only. It pays up to $5,000 a year, with a $100 deductible and 90% back. You cannot change those numbers.
  • Trupanion: join before the 14th birthday and coverage can last for life. No new dogs at 14 or older.
  • Pets Best: takes pets of any age over 7 weeks. Dogs with some serious long-term problems may only be offered an accident-only plan.

Vet notes matter more than age

Picture two dogs. One is 8 with clean vet notes. The other is 12 with years of allergy visits. They are very different to insure.

Allergies, arthritis, tooth disease, knee problems, and heart murmurs are common in older dogs. They are the problems most likely to be left out.

  • Trupanion's own example: puppy allergies that were quiet for years are still left out.
  • Trupanion asks every vet who has seen your pet for records.
  • Fetch asks for records from the year before you sign up.

Want to know what will be left out before you count on it? Ask the carrier if it will review your dog's records.

Common questions

Can I get pet insurance for a dog over 8?

Yes, at most carriers. Fetch, Pets Best, and Spot list no top age. Trupanion takes dogs under 14. Embrace gives full plans to dogs under 15. Lemonade's top age depends on breed and state, so check the quote form.

Is there pet insurance with no age limit?

Fetch, Pets Best, and Spot say they have no upper age limit. That means your dog will not be turned down for age alone. Problems already in the vet notes are still usually left out.

What can a 14 or 15-year-old dog get?

Embrace offers an accident-only plan to dogs 15 and older. It pays up to $5,000 a year, with a $100 deductible and 90% back. Trupanion does not take new dogs at 14 or older, but dogs who join before 14 can keep coverage for life.

Will insurance cover my older dog's arthritis?

Not if the vet already noted it before you signed up. Arthritis, allergies, and tooth disease are common in older dogs and are often already in the notes.
