Does pet insurance cover seizures / epilepsy?
By Bradley Jacobs · Published Sep 22, 2026
Seizures can mean ER trips, years of seizure medicine, and sometimes a brain scan. Most accident-and-illness plans can help when seizures are new after waiting periods. One old seizure note or “rule out epilepsy” before the wait ends can leave that whole path unpaid.
What seizures and epilepsy mean for insurance
Insurers usually treat seizures and epilepsy as sickness, not an accident. That is true even when the first one looks sudden.
If the label is epilepsy with no clear cause found, some carriers also file it under born-with or inherited conditions. Related care sits on the sickness waiting-period clock (often around two weeks on public pages we checked). Verify on the quote form.
Bills can pile up from:
- ER visits and hospital stays for many seizures in a row
- Blood tests to rule out toxins or organ disease
- A brain scan such as an MRI, or a spinal fluid test
- A nerve-and-brain specialist visit
- Lifelong seizure medicine (like phenobarbital, potassium bromide, or levetiracetam) with follow-up blood tests
Wellness add-ons pay routine care on a schedule. They are not a stand-in for sickness coverage when seizures happen.
Lemonade’s epilepsy guide (updated Jun 2026) flags Border Collies, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and Belgian Shepherds among breeds that get epilepsy more often. Seizures from toxins, a brain tumor, liver disease, or low blood sugar are different medically. Insurance still treats most of that path as sickness once it is in the chart.
A quote can still come back for a dog that already has seizure notes. That does not mean seizure medicine or a brain scan will get paid back. See problems already in the record and senior dogs over 8.
The short answer
- New seizures after sickness waits, no prior signs: Lemonade, Embrace, Fetch, Pets Best, Spot, and Trupanion public pages describe eligible tests, seizure medicine, ER visits, and related bloodwork as in scope on accident-and-illness plans. Still subject to deductible, payback %, caps, and any medicine or exam-fee add-on. Verify on the quote form.
- Already diagnosed, on seizure medicine, or charted with seizure / brain signs: Treated as already there. Related care is left out.
- Lemonade: once epilepsy symptoms start, that path is not eligible. Epilepsy is also listed among common “already there” and inherited examples.
- Spot’s pre-existing guide (updated Sep 2026): epilepsy is a lifelong example almost always left out forever, even when the pet is stable now.
- Embrace groups long-lasting conditions the same way (diabetes and allergies are the worked examples; epilepsy fits that bucket once charted).
- Accident-only: Will not stand in for epilepsy or seizure paths filed as sickness. Pets Best lists epilepsy and seizures under illness on Accident & Illness, not Accident Only. See accident-only vs wellness.
Carrier-by-carrier (public pages)
Facts below come from official public pages fetched or re-checked in September 2026. Not personal underwriting. Verify on the quote form and the issued policy.
- Lemonade
- Epilepsy covered on the base accident-and-illness plan when not already there (eligible tests, prescription medicine, ER if needed).
- Once epilepsy symptoms start, Lemonade treats it as already there.
- Coverage guide (Aug 2026): epilepsy is an inherited example covered only when symptoms show up after waits.
- Typical public waits we mapped: 0 days accidents, 14 days sickness, 30 days bone-and-joint (state exceptions). Seizures ride the sickness clock. Verify on the quote form.
- Embrace
- “Already there” means any injury, illness, or odd finding noticed before the waiting period ends.
- Lifelong examples Embrace names include diabetes and allergies; charted epilepsy is handled the same way.
- Marketing covers inherited / born-with conditions when not already there. Typical sickness wait: about 14 days. Verify.
- Prescription and exam-fee add-ons can change the math for seizure medicine and specialist visits. Check the quote form.
- Fetch
- Markets accident-and-illness for unexpected sicknesses: tests, medicines, ER / hospital stays, inherited conditions when not already there.
- Sickness wait of up to 15 days on public coverage pages; no accident wait in the framing we use.
- Phenobarbital education article is clinical, not a coverage promise. Charted epilepsy sits in the long-lasting practical bucket. Verify meds and exam fees on the quote form.
- Pets Best
- Coverage page (Sep 2026) lists “Epilepsy and seizures” under eligible illnesses on Accident & Illness.
- Lists epilepsy again under inherited / born-with when not already there. Covered medicines language includes meds used to treat seizures for covered conditions.
- Signs or diagnosis before coverage or during the wait are not eligible. Accident Only does not cover illness paths. Confirm MRI and exam fees on the quote form.
- Spot
- Already-there guide (Sep 2026): epilepsy is a lifelong example almost always left out forever, even when well managed now.
- CA disclosure we mapped: about 14-day accident and sickness wait on the first period. Other states may differ.
- Accident-and-illness can help with new brain illness after waits when not already there. Accident-only will not. Verify.
- Trupanion
- US pre-existing FAQ (language we previously mapped; some CDN re-fetches were blocked): signs before the start date / waits stay left out.
- They cannot say yes or no for a specific condition until a claim is sent.
- Marketing often puts tests, hospital stays, and medicines in scope when not already there. Per-condition deductible / uncapped payout shape can matter for lifelong seizure-medicine paths. That is marketing, not a promise every claim pays. Waits are state-specific. Verify on the quote form.

One seizure note, “rule out epilepsy,” and brain workups count
You do not need a fancy epilepsy label for the insurer to say no.
These can be enough before the sickness wait ends:
- A seizure, a string of seizures, or a long seizure that would not stop
- Looked confused after a seizure, or fell over and paddled their legs
- Vet wrote “rule out epilepsy”
- Brain scan, spinal fluid test, or seizure medicine already started
Lemonade says it plainly: once epilepsy symptoms start, that path is not covered. Spot’s September 2026 guide says written-down symptoms count even without a final diagnosis.
If the dog is fine today and you are still shopping, do not wait for the first bad seizure before you look at sickness waits. That matters especially for Border Collies, Labs, Goldens, Beagles, and other breeds Lemonade flags, and for seniors where tumors or organ disease rise with age.
See senior dogs over 8 and enrollment age limits. If seizures are already in the record, assume that path is carved out. Then decide whether a policy still makes sense for other accidents and illnesses.
Tests, seizure medicine, and ER visits
Do not assume the base plan covers every piece. Check add-ons on the quote form.
- Tests (bloodwork, MRI, spinal fluid): Lemonade and Pets Best public pages treat eligible testing / MRI as in scope when the condition is not already there. Always verify how your claim is sorted and whether exam fees sit on an add-on.
- Seizure medicine: Lemonade names prescription medicines for eligible epilepsy. Pets Best names seizure meds among covered-medicine examples for covered conditions. Embrace and others may require a prescription add-on depending on state and product. We do not invent monthly drug prices.
- ER / many-in-a-row / long-seizure care: Lemonade’s epilepsy page includes ER visits when a seizure needs urgent care (when not already there). Education pages about many seizures in a row are clinical, not a payout promise.
- Exam fees: Often an optional add-on (Embrace, Lemonade visit fee). Pets with epilepsy may visit often early on. Missing exam-fee coverage changes the math even when tests and meds are eligible.
Sickness waits matter
Anything that starts during a wait is usually treated as already there for the life of that policy. Seizures almost always live on the sickness clock, not the accident clock, and not bone-and-joint. Verify all waits on the quote form.
- Lemonade: 14-day sickness wait on the public guide (0-day accident, 30-day bone-and-joint). Seizures are sickness / inherited, not bone-and-joint.
- Embrace: Typically 14-day sickness wait. Verify.
- Fetch: Sickness wait of up to 15 days; no accident wait in the framing we use.
- Pets Best / Spot / Trupanion: State-specific. Spot CA disclosure ~14 days accident/sickness on the first period we mapped. Trupanion waits: verify.
Related: problems already in the record, cancer coverage (brain tumor as another cause), diabetes (sugar / organ-related seizures), accident-only vs wellness.
What wellness and accident-only will not do
- Wellness / check-up packages: Budget for vaccines and yearly bloodwork. Not for brain-scan workups, spinal fluid tests, or years of seizure medicine.
- Accident-only: Pays unexpected injuries. Not sickness-filed seizure disease or inherited epilepsy.
Mixing product types is how families buy the wrong thing for brain risk. See accident-only vs wellness.
