Does pet insurance cover IVDD in dachshunds?
By Bradley Jacobs · Published Sep 16, 2026
IVDD means a slipped or burst disc in the spine. It is the classic long-back, short-leg bill. Dachshunds and similar breeds often already have back pain, wobbly walking, knuckling toes, or paralysis notes long before anyone shops for a policy.
What IVDD means for insurance
Insurers usually file IVDD under illness or bone-and-joint / spine, not accident, even when signs appear suddenly after a jump or scramble. That puts disc disease on the illness clock and, at carriers that isolate joint and spine conditions, on a longer bone-and-joint waiting period.
Bills stack fast: neuro exams and imaging (often MRI or CT), crate rest and pain protocols, surgery such as disc surgery, and rehab. Wellness add-ons pay routine care on a schedule; they are not a substitute for illness / bone-and-joint coverage when a disc herniates.
A quote can still come back for a dachshund (or Frenchie, corgi, basset, beagle, Shih Tzu) that already has back notes. That does not mean disc care will be paid back.
See problems already in the record for the general rule, senior dogs over 8 when age and spine risk stack together, and bone-and-joint waiting periods when the clock is longer than ordinary illness.
The short answer
- New IVDD after applicable waits, no prior signs:
- Public pages from Lemonade, Embrace, Fetch, Pets Best, Spot, and Trupanion describe eligible illness / bone-and-joint / inherited care (tests, surgery, eligible meds, related monitoring) as in scope on an accident-and-illness policy when disc disease first appears after waiting periods, subject to deductible, payback %, annual or other limits, and any rehab or exam-fee add-on the carrier requires.
- Whether IVDD rides the illness clock or a separate bone-and-joint clock depends on the carrier and state.
- Verify on the quote form.
- Already diagnosed, charted with back pain, wobbly walking, knuckling, paralysis, “rule out IVDD,” or prior disc / disc surgery surgery:
- Treated as already there.
- Related treatment is excluded.
- Fetch lists ruptured intervertebral disc and spinal compression among lifelong pre-existing examples.
- Embrace’s bone-and-joint help article names IVDD among dog conditions that can face a long (~180-day) bone-and-joint window, and sample / disclosure language we mapped treats prior IVDD as excluding future episodes in other disc spaces too.
- Pets Best sample policy language treats intervertebral disc conditions as medical (not accident) and can date them pre-existing from signs before the effective date or wait end.
- Accident-only: Will not stand in for IVDD / disc disease. Accident-only pays unexpected injuries, not degenerative or breed-predisposed disc disease filed as illness / bone-and-joint. See accident-only vs wellness.
Carrier-by-carrier (public pages)
Facts below come from official public pages fetched or re-checked in September 2026. They are not personalized underwriting.
Label anything operational stale-prone: verify on the quote form and the issued policy.
- Lemonade:
- IVDD explainer (updated Jun 2026), IVDD is covered under Lemonade’s base accident-and-illness policy when it is not pre-existing, including eligible tests, surgery, and follow-up care; physical therapy is called out as often needing the optional Physical Therapy add-on.
- Dachshund breed page (updated Jun 2026) lists Back Disc Disease (IVDD) among common dachshund claims and markets coverage for IVDD when it develops after enrollment.
- Waiting-period guide: 0 days accidents, 14 days illness, 30 days bone-and-joint in the public framing we use, IVDD is often treated as bone-and-joint / spine, so confirm how your claim is classified. pre-existing (signs, diagnosis, or treatment before the applicable wait ends) is not covered.
- Verify on the quote form.
- Embrace:
- Bone-and-joint waiting-period help article lists Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD) among the dog bone-and-joint conditions that, when they occur or show symptoms before the illness wait ends or during the first ~180 days, are excluded for the life of the policy (sometimes reducible with a vet bone-and-joint exam / bone-and-joint Report Card, state-specific).
- Public waiting-period pages: typically 14 days illness; accident coverage on the effective date.
- Sample / disclosure language we previously mapped also says a pet with IVDD before that window runs a higher risk of further episodes in other disc spaces and will not be covered for future incidences in any area.
- Verify on the quote form.
- Fetch:
- Pre-existing page lists ruptured intervertebral disc and spinal compression among lifelong pre-existing examples (alongside torn ligament, allergies, arthritis, diabetes, thyroid).
- Fetch’s IVDD marketing and accident-and-illness pages say IVDD tests and treatments, including surgery and rehab modalities Fetch markets as standard, can be covered when not pre-existing; dachshunds and other long-back, short-leg breeds are named as higher risk.
- Illness wait of up to 15 days on public coverage pages; no accident wait in the public framing we use.
- Breed-specific predisposition alone is not pre-existing, signs before signup or during the wait are.
- Verify on the quote form.
- Pets Best:
- Inherited / born-with coverage page names IVDD among common inherited conditions that Accident & Illness plans can cover when symptoms are not present before the effective date or during applicable waits.
- Coverage page and surgery marketing likewise put IVDD in the inherited / surgery conversation when not pre-existing.
- Sample policy booklets we previously mapped define Intervertebral Disc Condition broadly (herniation, rupture, slipped disc, calcification, etc.) as a medical condition, not an accident, and can treat disc conditions as already there if present before the effective date or wait end (with lookback rules that are state-specific).
- Waiting periods are state-specific; a MN sample we previously mapped uses 14 days illness, 3 days injury, and a longer cruciate clock, do not assume IVDD shares that exact cruciate number.
- Verify on the quote form.
- Spot:
- Chronic / pre-existing not covered on Spot’s public pre-existing pages.
- Spot’s CA insurer disclosure we previously mapped uses a 14-day accident and illness wait on the first policy period; ligament and knee also 14 days on that notice.
- IVDD is spine / disc disease, not a knee tear, confirm how your state’s Spot policy clocks disc disease and whether any longer bone-and-joint window applies.
- Spot’s 180-day path for problems that can clear up (examples like broken bones) does not apply to ligament and knee on that CA notice; do not assume disc disease can use a “cured” path.
- Verify.
- Trupanion:
- US pre-existing FAQ (language we previously mapped; a direct re-fetch was CDN-blocked on some attempts), conditions with signs before the effective date / waits stay excluded; eligibility for a specific condition cannot be determined until a claim is submitted.
- Trupanion’s long-term-care marketing names IVDD alongside hip dysplasia and cancer as a condition that can need ongoing management, and highlights Trupanion’s per-condition deductible / uncapped payout structure for lifelong pathways.
- That is marketing framing.
- It is not a promise every disc claim pays.
- Some Trupanion policy-book language treats slipped disc disease that appears in a new location after prior treatment as related; assume multi-level disc history can travel.
- Waiting periods are state-specific.
- Verify on the quote form.

Back pain, wobbly walking, and “rule out IVDD” count as signs
A formal MRI diagnosis is not required for an exclusion. Chart notes about yelping when picked up, hunched posture, reluctance to jump, wobbly hind end, knuckling, dragging toes, “rule out IVDD,” prior crate rest for a back episode, or surgery already done before the applicable wait ended can be enough for carriers to date pre-existing from signs.
Lemonade’s public pre-existing framing is explicit that signs, diagnosis, or treatment before the waiting period ends make a condition pre-existing. Embrace and Pets Best sample language can also treat later disc episodes in other spinal segments as part of the same IVDD pathway once one episode is on the record.
If the dog is sound today and you are still shopping, especially for dachshunds, French bulldogs, corgis, and other long-back, short-leg breeds. Do not wait for the first bad back episode before you look at illness and bone-and-joint waits.
See bone-and-joint waiting periods. If IVDD (or a suspicious neuro workup) is already in the record, assume that pathway is carved out, then decide whether a policy still makes sense for unrelated accidents and illnesses.
See enrollment age limits when senior enrollment caps collide with breed risk.
bone-and-joint waits matter (IVDD often rides illness or ortho)
Anything that starts during a wait is typically classified as pre-existing for the life of that policy. IVDD / disc disease often lives on the illness clock, but carriers that isolate spine and joint disease can put related claims on a longer bone-and-joint window.
All waits: verify on the quote form.
- Lemonade: 30-day bone-and-joint wait on the public waiting-period guide (plus 14-day illness). Confirm how your IVDD claim is classified.
- Embrace: IVDD is named on Embrace’s bone-and-joint waiting-period help article; dogs often face ~180 days for listed bone-and-joint conditions including IVDD (sometimes reducible with a vet ortho exam). State-specific.
- Pets Best: Disc conditions are medical in sample policy language we mapped; illness / injury waits are state-specific. Do not assume IVDD shares the cruciate 6-month sample clock, verify.
- Fetch / Spot / Trupanion: Illness or state-specific clocks; Fetch public illness wait up to 15 days; Spot CA disclosure ~14 days accident/illness on the first period we mapped. Verify how disc disease is timed in your state.

Dachshunds, breed risk, and pricing (verify on the quote form)
We do not invent premiums or claim payouts. High-risk and long-back, short-leg breeds (dachshunds especially) may price differently than a mixed-breed quote of the same age and zip, age, location, deductible, payback %, and optional add-ons also move the number.
Always run the carrier quote form; do not treat any blog or breed page average as your price.
Carriers do publish rough treatment illustrations on educational pages; those are planning ranges, not what you will pay or be paid back. Example we fetched: Lemonade’s Dachshund page lists Back Disc Disease (IVDD) at an illustrative $2,500–$8,000 average treatment cost on that table.
Always verify current pricing with your vet and the quote form.
What wellness and accident-only will not do
Wellness / preventive packages budget for vaccines, annual bloodwork, and similar routine items, not MRI, disc surgery, or months of neuro rehab for IVDD. Accident-only pays unexpected injuries, not degenerative or breed-predisposed disc disease that was already in the chart or that falls under illness / bone-and-joint.
Mixing product types is how families buy the wrong thing for dachshund back risk. See accident-only vs wellness.
