Does pet insurance cover Cushing's disease?
By Bradley Jacobs · Published Sep 23, 2026
Cushing's is when a dog's body makes too much of a stress hormone called cortisol. It shows up most in middle-aged and older dogs. You may see a lot of thirst, more pee, a round belly, thin hair, or extra hunger.
What Cushing's means for insurance
Insurers usually treat Cushing's as sickness, not an accident. That puts it on the sickness waiting-period clock (often around two weeks on public pages we checked. Verify on the quote form). Bills can stack for years: blood tests and special hormone tests, an ultrasound of the belly, Cushing medicine for life, and follow-up bloodwork to dial in the dose.
Some dogs also need care for side problems like skin infections, bladder infections, or even diabetes that can ride along. Wellness add-ons pay routine care on a schedule.
They are not a stand-in for sickness coverage when Cushing's shows up.
Lemonade's Cushing's guide (updated Jun 2026) says it mostly hits middle-aged and senior dogs, and flags Poodles, Dachshunds, Boxers, Beagles, Boston Terriers, and Yorkshire Terriers among breeds that get it more often. A quote can still come back for a dog that already has Cushing notes.
That does not mean Cushing medicine or hormone tests will get paid back. See problems already in the record for the general rule, and senior dogs over 8 when age and hormone risk stack together.
The short answer
- New Cushing's after sickness waits, no prior signs:
- Public pages from Lemonade, Embrace, Fetch, Pets Best, Spot, and Trupanion describe eligible sickness care (tests, eligible Cushing medicine, related check bloodwork) as in scope on an accident-and-illness plan when Cushing's first shows up after waiting periods, subject to deductible, payback %, yearly or other caps, and any medicine or exam-fee add-on the carrier wants.
- Lemonade says it plainly: Cushing's is covered on the base accident-and-illness plan when it is not already there, including eligible bloodwork, imaging, and ongoing medicine.
- Verify on the quote form.
- Already diagnosed, on Cushing medicine, or charted with thirst / pot belly / hormone signs:
- Treated as already there before coverage.
- Related care is left out.
- Lemonade groups endocrine (hormone) diseases with other long-lasting problems that cannot use a "cured after symptom-free months" path.
- Embrace lists diabetes among lifelong examples that stay out forever once charted.
- Cushing's sits in that same long-lasting hormone bucket once it is in the notes.
- Spot's pre-existing guides treat long-lasting illness the same way in practice.
- Accident-only: Will not stand in for Cushing's. Accident-only pays unexpected injuries, not hormone sickness. See accident-only vs wellness.
Carrier-by-carrier (public pages)
Facts below come from official public pages fetched or re-checked in September 2026. They are not personal underwriting.
Label anything that can go stale: verify on the quote form and the issued policy.
- Lemonade:
- Cushing's-in-dogs explained page (updated Jun 15, 2026) says Cushing's is covered under Lemonade Pet's base accident-and-illness plan when it is not already there.
- That includes eligible bloodwork, imaging, and the ongoing medicine that usually manages the condition.
- Lemonade's broader pre-existing guide treats endocrine (hormone) diseases as chronic.
- Once signs start before waits end, that path stays out.
- Typical public waits we previously mapped: 0 days accidents, 14 days sickness, 30 days bone-and-joint (state exceptions).
- Cushing's rides the sickness clock, not the bone-and-joint clock.
- Verify on the quote form.
- Embrace:
- Coverage FAQ, "already there" means any injury, illness, or odd finding noticed before the end of the waiting period.
- Lifelong examples Embrace names include diabetes and allergies (long-lasting bucket; Cushing's is a hormone illness handled the same way once charted).
- Genetic / breed coverage marketing says Embrace covers inherited and born-with conditions when not already there.
- Sickness wait on Embrace's public waiting-period pages: typically 14 days, verify.
- Prescription-drug and exam-fee add-ons can change the math for Cushing medicine and specialist visits.
- Verify on the quote form.
- Fetch:
- Coverage page markets accident-and-illness for unexpected sicknesses, including tests, medicines, hospital stays, and inherited / born-with / breed conditions when not already there.
- Sickness wait of up to 15 days on public coverage pages; no accident wait in the framing we use.
- Fetch's pre-existing page lists diabetes, arthritis, and thyroid among lifelong examples.
- Charted Cushing's sits in that long-lasting practical bucket.
- Verify meds and exam fees on the quote form.
- Pets Best:
- Coverage pages describe accident-and-illness plans as helping with eligible illnesses, chronic conditions, tests, and prescription medicines when not already there.
- Already-there signs or diagnosis before coverage or during the wait are not eligible.
- Accident Only does not cover illness paths.
- Confirm Cushing medicine, ultrasounds, and exam fees on the quote form for your state.
- Spot:
- Already-there conditions guides treat long-lasting illness (diabetes, heart disease, and similar) as almost always left out forever even when the pet is stable now.
- Cushing's fits that long-lasting practical bucket once charted.
- Spot's kidney-disease education page (updated Sep 2026) is a reminder that senior thirst and pee changes also need a vet workup (kidney disease and Cushing's can look alike early on).
- Accident-and-illness can help with new hormone illness after waits when not already there.
- Accident-only will not.
- Verify.
- Trupanion:
- US pre-existing FAQ language we previously mapped: conditions with signs before the start date / waits stay left out; they cannot say yes or no for a specific condition until a claim is sent.
- Marketing often puts sickness care (tests, hospital stays, medicines) in scope when not already there, with Trupanion's per-condition deductible / uncapped payout shape mattering for lifelong medicine paths.
- That is marketing framing, not a promise every Cushing claim pays.
- Waiting periods are state-specific.
- Verify on the quote form.

Thirst notes, pot belly, and hormone tests count as signs
You do not need a final Cushing's label for the insurer to say no. If the vet notes already say your dog drinks a lot, pees a lot, has a round belly, thin skin or hair loss on the sides, pants a lot at rest, or the vet ordered special hormone blood tests or a belly ultrasound to check the glands, that can be enough.
Same if they already started Cushing medicine before the sickness waiting period ended. Lemonade's pre-existing guide is clear: signs, diagnosis, or treatment before waits end put that path off the table.
Spot-style guides say written-down symptoms count even without a final diagnosis.
If the dog is fine today and you are still shopping, especially for Poodles, Dachshunds, Boxers, Beagles, Boston Terriers, Yorkies, and other breeds Lemonade flags, or for seniors where thirst and pee changes can also mean kidney disease or diabetes, do not wait for a full hormone workup before you look at sickness waits. See senior dogs over 8; for age cutoffs, see enrollment age limits.
If Cushing's (or a suspicious hormone workup) is already in the record, assume that path is carved out, then decide whether a policy still makes sense for other accidents and illnesses.
Tests, Cushing medicine, and follow-ups (do not assume the base plan)
- Tests (bloodwork, hormone tests, ultrasound):
- Lemonade's Cushing's page treats eligible bloodwork and imaging as in scope when Cushing's is not already there.
- Pets Best and Fetch market tests for covered illnesses the same way.
- Always verify how your claim is sorted and whether exam fees sit on an add-on.
- Cushing medicine: Lemonade names ongoing medicine for eligible Cushing's on the base plan. Embrace and others may require or market a prescription add-on depending on state and product. Verify on the quote form. We do not invent monthly drug prices.
- Follow-up bloodwork: Dogs on Cushing medicine need repeat checks, often more often at the start. That can be a big part of the yearly bill even when the meds themselves are eligible.
- Exam fees: Often an optional add-on (Embrace, Lemonade visit fee). Pets with Cushing's may visit often early on. Missing exam-fee coverage changes the math even when tests and meds are eligible.
Sickness waits matter (Cushing's rides sickness, not accident)
Anything that starts during a wait is usually treated as already there for the life of that policy. Cushing's almost always lives on the sickness clock, not the accident clock, and not bone-and-joint.
All waits: verify on the quote form.
- Lemonade: 14-day sickness wait on the public waiting-period guide (plus 0-day accident, 30-day bone-and-joint. Cushing's is sickness / hormone illness, not bone-and-joint).
- Embrace: Typically 14-day sickness wait on public waiting-period pages, verify.
- Fetch: Sickness wait of up to 15 days on public coverage pages; no accident wait in the framing we use.
- Pets Best / Spot / Trupanion: Sickness / injury waits are state-specific. Spot CA disclosure ~14 days accident/sickness on the first period we mapped. Trupanion waits are state-specific, verify.

What wellness and accident-only will not do
Wellness / check-up packages budget for vaccines, yearly bloodwork, and similar routine items, not years of Cushing medicine or special hormone tests after a diagnosis. Accident-only pays unexpected injuries, not sickness-filed hormone disease that was already in the chart.
Mixing product types is how families buy the wrong thing for senior hormone risk. See accident-only vs wellness.
